Cha Eun-woo Apologizes for Tax Evasion Scandal, Humbly Accepts Investigation Results

South Korea’s “face genius” Cha Eun-woo recently became embroiled in a tax evasion scandal, with the Korean National Tax Service pursuing a recovery of 20 billion KRW (approximately 54.74 million MYR). Currently serving in the military, he issued an all-black post on Instagram on the evening of the 26th to apologize, emphasizing that he will take responsibility and denying that he enlisted in the military to avoid the incident. Although he did not directly admit to tax evasion, throughout the statement he mentioned taking responsibility, which netizens have interpreted as an indirect admission.

Cha Eun-woo stated in his post, “Hello everyone, this is Cha Eun-woo. Recently, issues related to me have caused many people concern and disappointment. For this I sincerely apologize to everyone. Taking this incident as a turning point, I am reflecting on whether, as a citizen of the Republic of Korea, I have been sufficiently rigorous in fulfilling my tax obligations.” He said he has been thinking these past few days about how to express his apology to those hurt by this incident. Although he worries that lengthy wording may sound like an excuse or make people feel fatigued, for this incident, he decided to personally explain and apologize publicly, as this is his due responsibility.

Cha Eun-woo revealed that he wrote this letter after finishing work in the military, “Currently, I am serving in the army, but it was not a choice made to evade this controversy. Last year, I was unable to delay enlistment any further, so I had no choice but to enlist before the tax investigation procedures were complete. But it’s due to my shortcomings that this misunderstanding occurred, and I feel a great sense of responsibility.”

Cha Eun-woo said that if he were not currently serving as a soldier, he would personally visit everyone affected by this matter one by one and apologize in person. Now, he sincerely writes this post. He expressed that in the past 11 years, his “shortcomings” have outweighed what he “possesses,” and that his current highly-praised status is entirely thanks to everyone’s selfless love and support.

This is why Cha Eun-woo feels he has not been able to repay all those who have always supported him and worked with him, and thus feels extremely guilty. Finally, he emphasized that he will honestly cooperate with subsequent tax-related procedures and, based on the final decision made by the relevant authorities, will humbly accept the outcome and assume the corresponding responsibility. In the future, he will also scrutinize himself more strictly, cherish the love everyone has given him, and live with an even stronger sense of responsibility.
