(Seria, 29th) Brunei Shell Petroleum Company (BSP) held a ribbon-cutting ceremony yesterday to celebrate the successful completion of its flagship solar photovoltaic power station expansion project. The expansion, located in Area G11 and covering three hectares, was originally a residential area. Upon completion, an additional installed capacity of 3 megawatts peak (MWp) and an annual power output of approximately 4,500 megawatt-hours (MWh) have been added, increasing BSP's flagship station total installed capacity to 6.3 MWp.

Dignitaries attending the event included Brunei's Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister of Finance and Economy, Dato Liu Guangming, who is also a BSP board member. Liu Guangming stated that BSP plays a vital role in the nation's economic transformation, helping to drive Brunei from a resource-based economy towards a diversified, resilient, and sustainable development path.

He pointed out that Brunei's energy journey began nearly a century ago in Seria, a small town that is the birthplace of the country's oil and gas industry and laid the foundation for national prosperity. From the discovery of the first barrel of oil to the construction of world-class facilities, Seria has always been a pillar of Brunei's energy development, driving economic growth, creating opportunities, and shaping the nation into a trusted international energy partner.

Liu Guangming emphasized: “Seria’s lasting contribution is not only reflected in oil output and revenue, but also in its resilience, spirit of innovation, and professional skills, all of which continuously shape the nation's leadership in the energy sector.” He added that as the global energy sector shifts towards cleaner, more sustainable development, Brunei is actively participating in this process by investing in solar power stations, mobilizing various resources and efforts to create a green future for the country and its people.

He further pointed out that the BSP photovoltaic power station expansion project not only contributes to the national grid but also brings the 2035 goal of at least 30% renewable energy share in installed capacity a step closer. The project symbolizes the joint commitment of government, enterprises, and the community in addressing climate change and sustainable development, demonstrating that energy transition is not only about increasing renewables but also responsibly integrating traditional oil & gas with clean energy to achieve economic growth, energy security, and climate commitments.

The expansion project took over 80,000 work hours, and will offset about 3,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, providing clean energy to BSP headquarters. This expansion also supports national development goals by ensuring that by 2035, renewable energy constitutes at least 30% of total installed capacity, marking a solid step towards Brunei's low-carbon energy transition and sustainable development.
