(Miri, 25th) Sarawak's Minister of Transportation, Dato Seri Lee Kim Shin, stated at the "2025 Eid Transport Industry Gathering Dinner" held in Miri that the Sarawak government will continue to promote and strengthen the development of transportation infrastructure, and actively embrace artificial intelligence (AI) technology to enhance the efficiency and safety of the transportation system.
Additionally, during his speech, he humorously shared that he recently tried using AI technology to create a cartoon version of himself as part of the banquet's on-site banner. He laughed and said, "Everyone take a look at the banner behind me, isn't there a ‘cute version’ of me there?"
He said this AI drawing experience made him personally feel the power and progress of technology. He mentioned that AI applications like ChatGPT and DeepSeek are now widely popular, and in the future, the Sarawak Ministry of Transportation plans to apply AI technology in transportation management, such as intelligent traffic light systems, predictive maintenance, and traffic safety warning systems, to enhance overall service levels.
"Sarawak cannot fall behind, we must actively embrace new technology, continuously move forward, and develop in sync with the world."
He also thanked various government departments, transportation industry operators, contractors, local communities, and media partners for their continuous support and cooperation and hoped that this exchange dinner could further strengthen relationships to create a more glorious future for Sarawak's transportation industry.
He pointed out that in recent years, the Sarawak Ministry of Transportation has implemented several important transportation projects in Miri, including the 14-vehicle Miri Intelligent Free Bus Service. He said that since its launch in October last year, it has been well-received by the citizens, especially providing great convenience to students, senior citizens, and the B40 group. This service demonstrates the Sarawak government's commitment to promoting environmentally friendly, inclusive, and convenient public transportation.
In addition, he disclosed that the government has approved the Miri Container Terminal project, which will be constructed next to the Pan Borneo Highway Public Works Department at a cost of RM20 million. This highly anticipated project was retendered on February 25 this year, with an expected construction period of 18 months. The terminal will help centrally manage heavy vehicles currently scattered across various locations, improving urban traffic order. It will also be equipped with facilities for overnight stays, rest, and maintenance.
Moreover, he mentioned the Sungai Tujoh Checkpoint Complex Building Upgrading Project. The project commenced on March 10 this year and is expected to be completed within 9 months, with a total value of over RM3.57 million. Upon completion, it will significantly improve the efficiency and facilities of border crossing between Sarawak and Brunei.
Additionally, the Miri Airport Expansion Project is about to commence to accommodate the continuous increase in passenger numbers. With the establishment of Sarawak's autonomous airline "Borneo Airways," this project becomes even more important and is expected to boost local tourism and economic development.
Lee Kim Shin emphasized that all the above development plans reflect the Sarawak government's continuous investment in enhancing transportation infrastructure in Miri and its surrounding areas, aiming to improve the quality of life for the people and promote local economic development.
