(Bandar Seri Begawan, 8th) Professor Hu Yu, from the School of Journalism and Communication at Tsinghua University and Dean of the Institute of Cultural and Creative Development at Tsinghua University, recently led a research team of the Tsinghua University Global Competence Overseas Practice Course to visit the Chung Hwa Middle School in Brunei, to carry out an academic research activity.
The theme of this research is “Exploring Brunei: Sino-Brunei Cultural Exchange and the Community of Shared Future with Neighboring Countries.” Against the backdrop of deepening the construction of a community of shared future with surrounding countries, the team visited Brunei for fieldwork, reaching out to local governments, universities, and representative Chinese enterprises, to explore the unique cultural charm of Southeast Asia’s Islamic monarchy, to understand the current status of Sino-Brunei cultural exchange, to deeply contemplate Brunei’s role and experience in constructing a community of shared future with its neighbors, and to personally perceive the era's significance of the integration of the “Belt and Road” Initiative with Brunei's “Wawasan 2035,” building a bridge of friendship for global cultural mutual learning and Sino-Brunei civil exchange through a youth perspective.
The research team led by Professor Hu Yu includes Chen Yu and Zhou Anjian, master's students from the School of Journalism and Communication at Tsinghua University; Chen Meiyi, Liu Xingwei, and Xiao Sihang, fourth-year undergraduate students from the School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University; and Chen Yihao, Li Changhong, and Zhu Xiaoxing, third-year undergraduates from Tsinghua University’s New Asia College.
On the afternoon of June 5th, the arrival of the Global Competence Overseas Practice Course research team from Tsinghua University was welcomed by Mr. Yang Dezhen, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Chung Hwa Middle School, along with the school's Acting Director Lin Wenhua, Vice Chairman Lin Dencai, Deputy Auditing Director Lin Dengyuan, Principal Xu Yuelan, Assistant Principals Chen Meidian and Shen Manling, and representatives of the Chinese Department teachers.
The Global Competence Overseas Practice Course research team from Tsinghua University first held a discussion with representatives of the students of Chung Hwa Middle School in the Chen Tianzhen Library of the school. They then moved to the Zhao Ying Room for a tea meeting, where the hosts and guests had a delightful interaction. During the exchange, the team practically understood the achievements made by Chung Hwa Middle School in inheriting and promoting Chinese culture, spreading and promoting Chinese language, and facilitating Sino-Brunei cultural exchanges, to increase Tsinghua students’ understanding and comprehension of Sino-Brunei relations.
In the discussion, Chairman Yang Dezhen, on behalf of the school board, all teachers and students, expressed a warm welcome and sincere greetings to the visitors from Tsinghua University: “In this early summer filled with hope, we warmly welcome the arrival of the Global Competence Overseas Practice Course research team from Tsinghua University with joyful hearts.”

Chairman Yang said that since its establishment, Chung Hwa Middle School has adhered to the educational philosophy of “emphasizing three languages and five education aspects,” not only training a large number of students who are proficient in Chinese, English, and Malay and possess both virtues and talents but also introducing special courses like martial arts, calligraphy, Chinese music, and lion dance, making Chinese culture thrive on the land of Borneo, truly undertaking the mission of inheriting Chinese culture and promoting the integration of diverse cultural exchanges. “In past years, we have also actively engaged in the multicultural construction of Brunei, promoting harmonious social development through friendly exchanges with other ethnic groups.” he added.
He emphasized that the exchange between Chung Hwa Middle School teachers and students and Tsinghua University's research team is undoubtedly a rare learning opportunity. He looks forward to sharing Chung Hwa Middle School’s experiences and achievements in education and teaching, cultural inheritance with the Tsinghua University research team, and is eager to hear frontier ideas and innovative practices from Tsinghua University. He recalled the experiences of visiting Dutong Chung Hwa School and Jiuting Chung Hwa School over the past two days and deeply realized the challenges and difficulties faced by Chinese educators in Brunei. Professor Hu Yu highly praised the outstanding educational achievements accomplished under Chung Hwa Middle School’s educational policy of “emphasizing three languages, integrating five educative approaches.”
He emphasized that despite facing numerous challenges, Chinese schools and educators in Brunei have always adhered to their positions, serving as an important carrier and core force for the overseas inheritance and promotion of Chinese culture. Professor Hu Yu pointed out that the sustainable development of Chinese schools requires not only the selfless dedication of educators but also strong support from all sectors of society. He mentioned that during discussions with the Chinese Embassy in Brunei, the Brunei Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Hengyi Petrochemical (Brunei) Co., Ltd., Chinese enterprises expressed their willingness to support the development of local Chinese education.
In addition, Professor Hu Yu introduced Tsinghua University's experience in conducting admissions work in Malaysia and expressed his expectation for strengthening cooperation in the future, hoping to attract more outstanding students from Chung Hwa Middle School in Brunei to study further at Tsinghua University.
