(Bandar Seri Begawan, 5th) Speaker of the Brunei Legislative Council, Pehin Abdul Rahman, has called on Legislative Council members to ensure that debates during the 21st Council’s second session for 2025 are conducted in a mature, orderly, and prudent manner, and in accordance with the principles of the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB).
The Speaker, in his opening address at the second session of the 21st Legislative Council for 2025, urged members to uphold the integrity and standing of the Council, to fulfill the institution’s collective responsibilities, and to carry out its mission for the benefit of the people and the nation's future.
The Speaker stated that the Legislative Council should serve as a platform for the exchange of ideas, perspectives, and solutions to improve policies, enhance the welfare of the people, and act as a bridge between the government and the public.
"In discussing and debating issues, established conventions must always be respected and fully adhered to, ensuring the integrity of the Legislative Council. This will not only strengthen the deliberative process but also demonstrates that the Council is able to function in a disciplined and structured manner."
The Speaker also emphasized that one of the main agendas of the second session is to deliberate on the progress made in achieving Brunei's Vision 2035.
The Speaker underscored that the nation’s success depends on the shared involvement, commitment, and ongoing cooperation of all political parties and all sectors of society.
He mentioned that this session also provides an opportunity for appointed members to raise questions for further clarification, and for ex officio members to share the government’s initiatives in support of the national development agenda.
