(Bangkok, 20th) Indonesia and Thailand have agreed to upgrade their diplomatic relations to a strategic partnership and pledged to promote bilateral trade and investment, while cooperating on internet fraud and combating drug trafficking.
Indonesian President Prabowo made an official visit to Thailand on Monday (May 19) for talks with Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha. This is the first official visit by an Indonesian president to Thailand in 20 years.
The Thai government issued a statement on Monday saying that, in conjunction with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries this year, Prayuth and Prabowo agreed to elevate bilateral relations to a strategic partnership. The statement also mentioned that the two countries will strengthen and deepen cooperation in three areas: politics and security, economy, and socio-culture.
In terms of politics and security, the two countries will promote cooperation between law enforcement agencies to tackle transnational crime, cybercrime, and enhance legal mutual assistance. The two countries will also strengthen contact between defense institutions, including cooperation in the defense industry.
Within this year, the two countries will hold the first joint trade committee meeting in Thailand to foster cooperation in food security, halal industry standardization, tourism, energy security, green growth, and the digital economy.
In terms of politics and security, the two countries will promote cooperation between law enforcement agencies to tackle transnational crime, cybercrime, and enhance legal mutual assistance. The two countries will also strengthen contact between defense institutions, including cooperation in the defense industry.
