58-year-old Hong Kong star Jordan Chan kicked off his new concert tour, “BIG MAN: Just a Man,” last weekend in Beijing. On the 20th, due to poor stage design, tickets were sold as if it were a 360° stage when in reality it was a three-sided stage. There was also a giant, movable, humanoid prop that, despite seeming visually impressive, severely blocked the view. Some fans who bought 1,288 RMB (about 790 MYR) tickets could only see Jordan Chan’s back for the first hour, and later could only hear his voice without seeing him at all. The audience was furious, shouting “Refund!” on the spot!

Because of the poor stage design and severe visual obstructions, multiple sections of the audience at the first show shouted “Refund!” in anger. Some claimed they could see the full performance for only 10% of the show, and a number of attendees were so displeased that they left early. The show was heavily criticized online. At the second show on the 21st, Jordan Chan sincerely apologized, revealing that after the previous night’s show, he and his team immediately worked through the night to make adjustments. He even personally squatted on stage to disassemble equipment and adjust the big screens, shedding tears as he did it. He promised continuous improvements and, getting emotional, choked up and eventually broke down in tears while apologizing.

Choking up, he shared that he had seen all of the comments online: “I’ve heard all your suggestions, and I’ll keep making changes until everyone is satisfied.” Crying, he asked fans to keep giving him feedback—he would take it all. Standing firm, he declared: “I’ll shoulder the sadness myself; all you need to do is be happy,” and with determination said, “Let’s just do it.” His wife, Cherrie Ying, also responded: “Big Man read too many reviews and ended up crying so hard today. It’s good to listen to feedback, or else I couldn’t see you either.” Her teasing yet supportive words eased the refund awkwardness and praised Jordan Chan’s upright attitude, turning public opinion around; fans widely called him “the most responsive to feedback.”
