After banning Nvidia chips to China, US targets DeepSeek

The New York Times reported on the 16th that the Trump administration is imposing a combination of regulatory measures on Chinese tech company DeepSeek. These measures not only include plans to prohibit DeepSeek from purchasing American technology, specifically Nvidia's artificial intelligence (AI) chips, but also potentially a complete ban on American users accessing its AI services.

The report cites information from informed sources.

Currently, DeepSeek, the White House, and the U.S. Department of Commerce have not responded to media requests for comment.

This week, the United States tightened the restrictions on Nvidia AI chips exported to China, with a particular focus on implementing strict controls on the H20 chip designed specifically for the Chinese market. According to Nvidia's internal assessment, this move could result in substantial losses of $5.5 billion (approximately 24.275 billion Malaysian Ringgit).

This is essentially an extension and intensification of the policies of the previous Biden administration. Since 2022, the U.S. has been prohibiting the export of Nvidia's most advanced chips to China on the grounds of national security, to prevent related technologies from being used in military applications.

In addition, U.S. authorities have formally requested that Nvidia provide details of its chip sales to China and Southeast Asia, with a focus on investigating how its products might circumvent export controls and become the computational basis for DeepSeek's models.
