The White House clarified that the statement released on the 15th, mentioning "due to China's retaliatory actions, goods shipped from China to the US now face tariffs of up to 245%" is not a new increase.
White House officials told Fox News Channel that some Chinese goods exported to the US face a 125% "reciprocal tariff" plus a 20% fentanyl tariff, and on top of that, specific goods are subject to Section 301 tariffs... totaling a maximum possible tariff rate of 245%.
Meanwhile, CNBC reporter Casella stated, "Only a very few specific goods face such high tariffs, such as medical syringes. Previously, tariffs on Chinese goods varied by category, ranging from 7.5% to 100%. Adding the new 145%, you can accurately say, as the White House stated on the 15th, that tariffs can now 'reach a maximum of 245%.'"
Casella said White House officials have confirmed her interpretation is correct.
According to the latest version of the "fact sheet," it is noted: "Due to China's retaliatory actions, goods shipped from China to the US now face tariffs of up to 245%. This includes a 125% 'reciprocal tariff,' a 20% tariff imposed in response to the fentanyl crisis, and tariffs ranging from 7.5% to 100% on specific goods under Section 301."
