Thailand Rejects Tourists Turning into Criminals: Ministry of Interior Says Absolutely No Tolerance

The Permanent Secretary of the Thai Ministry of Interior, Aphisit, stated on the 8th that recent illegal and criminal acts committed by domestic and foreign tourists in various provinces of Thailand have had a negative impact on Thailand’s tourism image and have caused anxiety among residents in many areas.

According to China News Agency, Aphisit said that Prime Minister Anutin is highly concerned about this and has instructed relevant agencies—including administrative, security, and tourism departments—to step up publicity and education for business operators and tourists. He has also ordered provincial administrative authorities, police forces, and related agencies to strictly enforce the law and implement preventive measures. Any illegal behavior must be resolutely punished, with absolutely no tolerance.

He further introduced that recently, authorities in Surat Thani Province have taken action against foreign nationals who have been residing long-term on Phangan Island, Samui Island, and Tao Island. These individuals are engaging in illegal professions under tourist visas and have committed other violations. The local government, along with security agencies, immigration police, and the provincial employment office, are working together to investigate business activities that these foreigners are conducting under the guise of acting as agents.

On Phuket Island, administrative authorities and law enforcement are working together with business operators to raise legal awareness among tourists through publicity. Law enforcement agencies are strictly upholding the law and imposing the most severe penalties on foreign tourists who break the law.

Aphisit emphasized that both Thai citizens and foreign nationals must abide by the law. Especially for foreigners, once entering Thailand, they must comply with Thai laws, must not engage in illegal activities, bully or oppress local citizens, or commit any improper acts that are offensive to public decency or contrary to Thailand’s cultural traditions.
