Starmer: If England Reaches World Cup Final, Will Go to US to Watch and Then Return to Resign

According to a report by The Times on the 13th local time, if the England team can reach the final of the current USA-Canada-Mexico World Cup, UK Prime Minister Starmer plans to go to the US to watch the match in person “just hours before stepping down.”

The report states that if England can defeat Argentina in the semi-final at local time 15th (3 a.m. Malaysia time on the 16th), it will be their first time advancing to the World Cup final since 1966. Starmer plans to go to New Jersey, USA, on the 19th local time to watch the final (3 a.m. Malaysia time on the 20th), and return to the UK “a few hours later” to submit his resignation to the British King.

According to The Times, from a logistical perspective, the time difference will make the plan “barely feasible.” The final of this World Cup will kick off at 3 p.m. US local time on the 19th and at the latest should finish by 6 p.m., that is, 11 p.m. UK time. Immediately after, Starmer will board a seven-hour overnight flight back to London, deliver his final speech at 10 Downing Street as Prime Minister, and then visit Buckingham Palace to meet the King. According to The Times, Starmer is expected to arrive in London at 7:30 a.m. UK time on the 20th and give a speech at Downing Street at 11 a.m., though the specific time is yet to be determined.
