SUBANG JAYA, July 23 (Bernama) -- Tourism Malaysia is strengthening efforts to boost domestic tourism through a strategic partnership with Mydin Mohamed Holdings Berhad (MYDIN) via the ‘Jom Jalan MYDIN’ campaign to promote shopping tourism in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VM2026).

Tourism Malaysia senior director of Advertising and Digital Division and head of VM2026 Secretariat Mohd Akbal Setia said domestic visitor spending reached RM34 billion in the first quarter of this year, up 15.8 per cent from RM29.4 billion recorded in the same period last year.

He said that during the same period, the country also recorded 74.7 million domestic visitor arrivals, an increase of 7.2 per cent compared to 69.7 million in the first quarter of last year.

“This positive momentum is what we must continue to build on through initiatives such as the ‘Jom Jalan MYDIN’ campaign,” he said at the launch of the campaign at the MYDIN Hypermarket here today.

He said the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) and Tourism Malaysia subscribe to the principle that the development of the country’s tourism industry should be driven by the support and participation of the people.

He said the campaign combines MOTAC’s three main thrusts, namely boosting domestic tourism, offering interactive shopping experiences and promoting Malaysian-made goods.

“With over 83 MYDIN branches nationwide, Tourism Malaysia is able to extend its tourism promotion directly to communities across the country,” he said.

MYDIN managing director Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin said shopping centres are no longer merely places to purchase daily necessities, but have evolved into platforms that offer customers meaningful experiences.

He said MYDN remains committed to supporting small and medium-sized industrial entrepreneurs (SMIs) and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by providing space to market locally made products from across the country.

“Through this campaign, we hope Malaysians will continue to recognise, appreciate and choose Malaysian-made products,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tourism Malaysia said in a statement that the campaign’s highlights include treasure hunt activities at selected MYDIN outlets, as well as opportunities to win domestic travel packages, including cruise holidays and stays at local hotels sponsored by TH Travel & Services Sdn Bhd.

Throughout the campaign, which runs from today until. Sept 30, shoppers can also enjoy prizes, vouchers and savings worth more than RM5 million, made possible through the support of participating suppliers.
