(Mexico City, 12th) Local governments in Mexico reported on the 10th that flooding caused by this week’s heavy rains has led to at least 28 deaths and considerable property damage.
The Mexican Civil Protection Department reported that 31 out of the country’s 32 states were hit by heavy rain, resulting in overflowing rivers and many villages being completely submerged, triggering landslides, mudslides, and road and bridge collapses.
Hidalgo, located in central Mexico, is one of the hardest-hit regions. Authorities there reported at least 16 deaths and damage to 1,000 houses, with 90 communities turned into isolated islands inaccessible to rescue personnel.
Authorities in the neighboring state of Puebla stated that at least 9 people have died there, but as many are still missing, the death toll may rise; about 80,000 people have been affected by the extreme weather.
Additionally, flooding resulted in 2 deaths in eastern Veracruz state and 1 in central Querétaro state.
After meeting with local officials and cabinet members, Mexican President Sheinbaum posted on X that efforts are underway to assist the public, reopen roads, and restore power; authorities have also deployed thousands of soldiers along with boats, airplanes, and helicopters to aid in disaster relief.
