(France, 13th) The French presidential office released an appointment announcement on Sunday (October 12), unveiling the main members of Prime Minister Lecornu’s new government in his second term, comprising 19 ministers and 15 ministerial delegates.
According to Xinhua News Agency, the Élysée Palace announcement stated that several ministers from Lecornu's first cabinet, which was appointed on the 5th, will remain in their posts. These include Foreign Minister Barrot, Economy and Finance Minister Le Maire, Justice Minister Darmanin, and Culture Minister Dati.
In addition, the new government’s Minister of Defense is Catherine Vautrin, former Minister of Labor, Health, Solidarity, and Family Affairs, while the Minister of the Interior is Laurent Nunez, former head of the Paris police.
Newcomers to the cabinet include Jean-Pierre Farandou, former head of France’s state railway company, who becomes Minister of Labor, and Monique Barbut, former president of the French branch of WWF, who takes the role of Minister for Ecological Transition. French media note that the new government is mainly composed of politicians, technocrats, and figures from civil society organizations.
After the appointments were announced, Lecornu said on social media that the new government would push for the approval of the new fiscal year’s budget before the end of the year.
Lecornu, who was serving as Defense Minister at the time, was appointed Prime Minister by President Macron on September 9, replacing former Prime Minister Bayrou, who was forced to resign after failing to win a vote of confidence in the National Assembly. On October 6, after just 27 days in office, Lecornu tendered his resignation, citing that “the conditions for exercising the functions of Prime Minister are no longer met,” and it was accepted. On the same evening, at Macron’s behest, Lecornu began two days of last-minute negotiations with all parties. On the 10th, Lecornu was reappointed as Prime Minister.
