(Kuala Lumpur, 16th) Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim has urged Education Minister Fadhlina and Higher Education Minister Dato’ Seri Zambry to resign as an act of responsibility for the Cabinet’s approval of recognizing the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) for entry into public universities.
In a statement released on Friday (16th), Hassan Karim pointed out that Fadhlina and Zambry, as the Education Minister and Higher Education Minister respectively, should defend the national education policy, as well as all matters related to admission pathways into Malaysia’s public higher education institutions.
“These two ministers, representing UMNO and PKR respectively, have failed to fulfill the mandate of protecting the nation and defending the national education policy. Their failure on the issue of UEC recognition is inexcusable.”
He stressed that the Cabinet has approved the recognition of the UEC as one of the pathways for entering public universities, but these two ministers have failed to defend the national education policy. Therefore, he urges the two of them to resign immediately.
Earlier, the Cabinet decided to allow UEC students to apply to pursue further studies in public higher education institutions in Malaysia, specifically for Chinese-related programs only, with the scope limited to four courses: Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Chinese Studies, Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Language and Linguistics, Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Studies, and Bachelor of Education in Chinese Language. The prerequisite is that they must have passed the Malay language and History subjects in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exam.
