On the 25th, Cuba’s Ministry of the Interior reported that a border guard patrol discovered a speedboat registered in Florida, USA, illegally entering Cuban territorial waters near Villa Clara Province. When the vessel opened fire, Cuban authorities returned fire, resulting in 4 attackers killed and 6 injured.
The statement said that as the border guards approached to verify the boat’s identity, the occupants of the speedboat fired at the Cuban personnel on duty, injuring members of the Cuban side.
The bulletin did not mention the identities of the attackers. The Ministry of the Interior stated that the relevant authorities are investigating the incident.
At present, tensions between Cuba and the United States are increasing. On January 29, US President Trump signed an executive order threatening to impose ad valorem tariffs on exports to the US from countries supplying oil to Cuba. On February 6, Cuba announced a series of measures in response to the new round of oil blockade by the US.
The US Closely Monitoring the Situation
On the other hand, US Vice President Vance stated the White House is “closely monitoring” the situation and expressed hope that “things are not as bad as we fear.”
He noted that Secretary of State Rubio is attending the Caribbean Community Summit.
Vance said that he has received a briefing from Rubio but “we do not know many details.”
