The globally popular Labubu toy has sparked a quirky designer toy craze worldwide, and now the even uglier British toy Fuggler—with its hollow stare, jagged teeth, and fart sound effect—has caught the attention of young collectors.
According to Fuggler's official website, Fuggler stands for Funny Ugly Monster, mischievous and ugly creatures whose antics and wild appearances warm players’ hearts—and take over their lives. Every Fuggler brings chaos wherever it goes.
Fuggler also sports a “BUTT-on” on its bottom; after installing batteries and pressing it, you’ll hear a variety of hilarious fart noises. Many players proudly share their Fuggler’s fart sounds on social media.
Fuggler was created by British artist Louise McGettrick, who says she hand-sewed the first Fugglers in her bedroom using a bag of fake teeth bought from eBay and some felt. Starting in 2010, she sold them on the crafts marketplace Etsy, and in 2018 sold the copyright to US toy and entertainment company Spin Master.
Unexpectedly, Fuggler has ridden the wave of Gen Z’s love for “anti-aesthetic” trends, becoming another cultural phenomenon after Labubu.
Unlike Labubu’s “sinister fairy” vibe, every yellowed tooth and every button eye on a Fuggler challenges traditional toy aesthetics and adds an air of mischievous rebellion. This design not only shatters the stereotype that cute must equal perfection, but also boosts interactive fun with its farting feature.
Unlike Labubu, which can only be purchased in pricey “blind boxes” that come with random styles, Fuggler is available through traditional retail channels, with single-unit prices remaining steady in the double- or low three-digit range, and can be found at major retailers and department stores.
Netizens note that Fuggler isn’t easily marked up by scalpers, making it more accessible. Compared to Labubu’s uniform expressions, Fugglers sport a variety of distinctive looks. As one netizen put it: “I won’t buy things that are just ugly—but if it’s ugly to the extreme, I want to see it for myself.”
