Former Philippine President Duterte Claims Poor Health; International Criminal Court Denies Temporary Release

Published at Nov 29, 2025 12:41 pm
The International Criminal Court on the 28th rejected former Philippine President Duterte's application for temporary release on health grounds.

According to Xinhua News Agency, the presiding judge of the International Criminal Court, Caranza, stated at the hearing that the reasons provided by Duterte's lawyer were insufficient to justify a temporary release.

Previously, Duterte's lawyer had appealed to the International Criminal Court, requesting Duterte's temporary release on the grounds of poor health.

On March 11 this year, Duterte was detained by police after returning to Manila International Airport from abroad. Authorities presented him with an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court. The plane carrying Duterte arrived in The Hague on March 12. On March 14, Duterte participated in the ICC's first hearing via video link.

During his tenure as mayor of Davao City and as President of the Philippines, Duterte launched anti-drug operations. In February 2018, the International Criminal Court notified the Philippine government that it would conduct a "preliminary investigation" to determine whether Duterte-led anti-drug actions had violated human rights. The Philippines formally withdrew from the International Criminal Court in 2019.
