(Kuching, 24th) An Australian woman accidentally fell yesterday evening while hiking at Mount Santubong. Authorities have launched a search and rescue operation, which continued this morning.
The Sarawak branch of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department stated that the injured is Belinda Lapier, who slipped and fell during her descent from the summit.
Authorities reported that they received the alert at 8:20 PM last night and arrived at the scene at 9:43 PM, subsequently launching the search and rescue (SAR) operation.
"Rescue personnel and forest rangers have gone to the last known contact point of the victim. Although there are obstacles along the route to the incident site, authorities are still able to maintain contact with the victim."
"The victim indicated that she is currently safe but is trapped at the site and unable to leave," the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said in a statement this morning.
Authorities also noted that the path is filled with rocks and large trees, and the darkness at night made it very difficult to reach the victim's location.
"The search and rescue operation was suspended at 3:30 AM and resumed this morning," the statement said.
