(Miri, 30th) A 47-year-old Indonesian man was fatally attacked and dragged into the river by a crocodile while fetching water near a palm oil plantation by the Suai Niah (Suai Niah) area alongside the Miri-Bintulu coastal highway today.
According to information from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba Sarawak), at the time of the incident, the deceased and two colleagues were collecting water by the riverbank to fill pesticide sprayers. As they were filling water, a crocodile suddenly lunged out of the river, bit the victim, and dragged him into the river. The two colleagues witnessed the victim’s struggle and cries for help, but were powerless to save him.
Upon receiving the report at 11:34 am, the fire department immediately dispatched a rescue team led by Operations Commander Rary Binjie (PBT II Rary Binjie) from the Batu Niah Fire Station to the scene.
The rescue team arrived at 12:20 pm and immediately launched a ground search operation, utilizing grappling hooks and surface search techniques, covering approximately 700 meters upstream and downstream from the incident location.
At about 4:40 pm, the rescue team found the victim’s body about 500 meters from the incident site. The body had been severely torn, and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The operation ended at 5:20 pm, and the victim’s body has been handed over to the police for further investigation.
