Former Chief Justice of Nepal Appointed as Interim Prime Minister

Former Chief Justice of Nepal's Supreme Court, Sushila Karki, was sworn in as the interim Prime Minister of Nepal at the Presidential Palace on the evening of the 12th, becoming Nepal's first female Prime Minister.

According to Xinhua News Agency, Nepalese President Ram Chandra Paudel appointed Sushila Karki as interim Prime Minister that evening and presided over the swearing-in ceremony. According to the appointment letter read out at the ceremony, Karki is responsible for all government departments, and the interim government is tasked with organizing a general election within six months. The Nepalese Presidential Palace later issued a statement saying that President Paudel, following Karki's advice, announced the dissolution of the House of Representatives of the Federal Parliament effective from 11 p.m. that night, and a general election is planned for March 5, 2026.

Demonstrations broke out in Kathmandu and other places on the 8th and 9th, resulting in significant casualties and property loss. Former Prime Minister Oli announced his resignation on the 9th. According to an agreement reached on the 12th between Nepal's major political parties and the groups that organized the demonstrations, Karki was appointed interim Prime Minister.

Karki, 73, previously served as Chief Justice of Nepal's Supreme Court. She was also the first female Chief Justice in Nepal's history.
