China's Ministry of Commerce spokesperson stated on the 8th that China has noticed that on Eastern Time April 7th, the U.S. threatened to further impose an additional 50% tariff on China. China firmly opposes this. If the U.S. escalates tariff measures, China will resolutely take countermeasures to safeguard its rights and interests.
According to a Xinhua report, the spokesperson said that the so-called "reciprocal tariffs" imposed by the U.S. on China are unfounded and are typical unilateral bullying. The countermeasures China has taken are to safeguard its sovereignty, security, and development interests, as well as to maintain the normal international trade order, which is entirely justified. The U.S. threat to upgrade tariffs on China is a mistake on top of a mistake, once again exposing the extortionist nature of the U.S., which China will never accept. If the U.S. persists in its course, China will accompany it to the end.
The spokesperson emphasized that China reiterates that there are no winners in a trade war, and protectionism is not the way out. Pressure and threats are not the right way to engage with China. China urges the U.S. to immediately correct its erroneous practices, cancel all unilateral tariff measures against China, stop economic and trade suppression on China, and work with China to resolve differences properly through equal dialogue based on mutual respect.
