U.S. President Trump threatened on the 7th that if China does not revoke its retaliatory plans, the U.S. will impose an additional 50% tariff on products imported from China.
Trump recently announced a “reciprocal tariff” rate, with China then imposing an additional 34% tariff, which will take effect on the 9th. Subsequently, China announced it would also impose an additional 34% tariff on U.S. imports.
Trump stated in a post on his social media “Truth Social”: “If China does not revoke the 34% tariff imposed based on its long-term trade abuse behavior by tomorrow, April 8, 2025, the U.S. will impose an ‘additional’ 50% tariff on China, effective April 9.”
He indicated that if other countries are willing, the U.S. would engage in negotiations with them.
Countries including India, Vietnam, and Israel have shown interest in negotiating with the U.S. to seek exemptions or adjustments to the tariff measures.
Earlier, Trump angrily criticized China as the “biggest abuser” of tariffs and stated that China ignored his warning to “not retaliate.”
