(Bau, 21st) Police raided a small wooden hut behind a house in Kampung Bijuray, Krokong, Bau yesterday, seizing a suspected homemade shotgun, a buckshot cartridge, and a long sword, and arrested a 38-year-old local man to assist in the investigation.
Bau District Police Chief Superintendent Mohamad Haid said the operation was carried out at around 8:05 am yesterday by officers from the Bau District Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ).
He said that inside the hut, near a mattress, police found the shotgun and a cartridge. A long sword about 93 centimeters long, with a red scabbard, was also seized and all items were confiscated.
He stated in a press release that preliminary investigations revealed the suspect claimed the shotgun was borrowed from an Indonesian friend. The friend, who previously worked at a nearby oil palm plantation, lost contact after returning to Jagoi Babang, Indonesia, in May this year.
"The suspect claims the shotgun was mainly used for hunting in the forest behind the village, and after his friend returned to his country, it has been kept in the hut ever since."
He added that the suspect also claimed the seized cartridge was purchased from a local individual with a legal firearms license for RM10.
"Police are currently investigating this statement, including whether any regulations regarding possession and sale of ammunition were violated."
As for the seized sword, the suspect stated it originally belonged to his father, but was taken by him and kept in the hut, claiming it was for self-protection.
Mohamad Haid said investigators had gone to the scene to examine, photograph, draw a sketch of the crime scene, and record the locations of all confiscated items as part of the investigation process.
He stated that police will send the seized shotgun to the Batu Kawa Armoury Unit for functionality testing and will continue to investigate the true origin of the firearm and ammunition, as well as track down other individuals potentially involved in the case.
"Police are investigating the case under Section 8(a) of the Firearms Act 1960 (possession of firearms without a valid license), and Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958 (possession of offensive weapon without reasonable excuse)."
