Alan Ling Sie Kiong: Freedom of the Press Must Be Guaranteed; Professional Media Injects Positive Energy into Social Reform

Published at Apr 24, 2025 03:03 pm
(Miri, 24th) Sarawak Pakatan Harapan Secretary, Sarawak DAP Secretary and National Sports Board member Alan Ling Sie Kiong pointed out that with the rapid development of digital technology and the widespread popularity of social media, the journalism industry is facing unprecedented challenges, including information chaos, the spread of fake news, and a crisis of media trust among the audience. This further highlights the importance of professional news agencies and journalistic ethics.

He called on the government and all sectors of society to work together to create a friendlier, safer, and freer working environment for journalists.

He said that only by guaranteeing freedom of the press can the media truly fulfill the role of the 'fourth estate' and become an important force in promoting social reform and constructive supervision.

Alan Ling emphasized that the real power of news lies in fairness and truth. Only by adhering to these principles can the media earn the trust of the people and continue to have a positive impact on society.

He said that news is not just about reporting events but is also a mission and responsibility. When society faces crises or injustices, journalists are the first to step forward to convey information, and this professional spirit deserves the respect and recognition of the entire society.

He made the above statement during his recent purchase of a ticket to support the Northern Sarawak Journalists Association (NSJA), which will hold its Golden Jubilee 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner on Friday, the 25th, at 6:30 PM at Mega Hotel.

Alan Ling stated that over the past half-century, the association has not only witnessed the evolution of the news environment but has also continuously cultivated professional talent, adhering to journalistic ideals and missions, with its contributions being widely acknowledged.

He praised journalists as the watchdogs of society, who over the years have been on the frontlines reporting, uncovering the truth, giving voice to the people, and recording the times, serving as an important force in promoting democracy and social progress.

“From conveying public sentiments to promoting policy changes, journalists have always been an indispensable bridge.”

He also took this opportunity to congratulate the Northern Sarawak Journalists Association on its 50th anniversary and thanked all journalists for steadfastly holding their positions over the years, uniting with their peers, and making valuable contributions in promoting news literacy and media responsibility in society.
