Criticized for Showing Allegiance by Attending Twin-City Forum in Shanghai, Chiang Wan-an: I Do Not Accept That Claim

On Sunday (December 28), Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an attended the main forum of the Twin-City Forum in Shanghai. That morning, Taiwan independence group “Taiwan Nation” protested at Taipei Songshan Airport, criticizing Chiang for showing allegiance (“tōu míng zhuàng”) to mainland China. In response, Chiang refuted the claim, saying the Twin-City Forum has been held for many years and that the central government welcomes such exchanges: “No one would accept such a statement.”

The Twin-City Forum is taking place in Shanghai this week, but a recent attack in Taipei led Mayor Chiang Wan-an to shorten his personal itinerary for the sake of stability, attending only the main forum on Sunday morning and returning to Taipei the same day.

According to United Daily News, Chiang Wan-an said this year marks the 16th Twin-City Forum, focusing on municipal affairs. The Taipei City Government applied to the central government as required and received approval as well as encouragement from the Mainland Affairs Council. He emphasized that his position is very clear and has always been consistent.

On the other hand, on December 4, Taiwan's Ministry of the Interior announced a one-year internet ban on mainland social media platform Xiaohongshu (“Little Red Book”), citing “cybersecurity risks” and “suspected scams,” leaving 3 million Taiwanese users unable to use the app normally. When asked whether he would raise this issue with the mainland side and whether the ban was due to inadequate handling of scams, Chiang Wan-an said he would reflect any issues that should be raised.
