(Bandar Seri Begawan, 18th) Poni Group of Brunei recently won the “Marine Public Welfare Activity of the Year (Asia)” award at the inaugural ADEX Blue Legacy Awards ceremony, in recognition of its outstanding contributions to marine conservation through its flagship national event “Ocean Week Brunei” (OWB).

The award ceremony was held on April 10, 2026, at the Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre. Winning this award marks a high level of international recognition for Ocean Week Brunei, and further highlights Brunei’s increasingly important role in global marine sustainable development.

Ocean Week Brunei has now entered its third edition and has developed into a cross-sector national event, bringing together government agencies, the private sector, academic institutions, NGOs, and community stakeholders. The event emphasizes “全民参与” (mass participation), and combines education, publicity, and practical conservation actions to raise public awareness and promote behavioral change.

The program is rich in content, covering coral planting and reef restoration, youth forums, sustainable development conferences, educational workshops, as well as nationwide beach clean-up campaigns. At the same time, initiatives such as the “Ocean Youth Grant Scheme,” “Ocean Voice Competition,” and “Ocean Champion Program” offer platforms for youth involvement to showcase innovation and leadership.

On the communications front, Ocean Week Brunei has consolidated social media and multi-platform publicity, achieving over 2.6 million exposures in 2025, and has been widely reported in multiple languages across newspapers, radio, television, and digital media, further expanding its regional influence.

Statistics show that last year’s event attracted about 3,000 participants, including 450 youths from 51 schools, as well as involvement from international embassies and regional partners.

In terms of environmental outcomes, the initiative successfully restored over 300 coral colonies, deployed 100 artificial reef balls, cleared more than 900 kilograms of marine debris, and supported local fishing communities, achieving significant results.

It is understood that the ADEX Blue Legacy Awards aim to recognize organizations and individuals contributing to marine conservation, sustainable development, and innovation. The award is affiliated with the Asia Dive Expo (ADEX), one of the region’s most representative marine events.

This year’s award ceremony also presented several other awards, including “Best Dive Agency E-Learning Platform” to RAID and “Best Ecotourism Destination (Asia)” to TRACC Borneo. The event attracted over 300 dive professionals, environmentalists, and industry leaders.

Notably, Ocean Week Brunei previously won the “Outstanding Corporate Social Responsibility Award” at the 2024 ASEAN Business Awards, further validating its regional impact.

The organizers announced that the 2026 Ocean Week Brunei will be held from June 2 to July 12, with plans to scale up and expand cooperation, launching three major pilot projects: oyster restoration, turtle protection, and mangrove rehabilitation, in pursuit of long-term environmental and socioeconomic benefits.

In addition, the new edition will offer increased public participation opportunities and interactive experiences. With this recent international accolade, Ocean Week Brunei has become a regional exemplar of marine conservation, setting a new milestone in advancing sustainable development.
