(Bintulu, 7th) The Bintulu Area Fishermen Association (PNK Bintulu) is exploring the realm of leisure fishing boats and fishing, proving that fishermen can break traditional boundaries and promote a more vibrant community economic development model.
Mohamad Faiz Fadzil, Chairman of the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM), stated that PNK Bintulu is the first association among the 18 PNKs in Sarawak to attempt this innovative project, and it is also the only association to undertake such a project.
“This initiative by PNK Bintulu not only reflects the local spirit of daring to try but also positions it as a potential model for the 90 PNKs nationwide,” he said at the “Caring and Harmonious Fishermen Activity” held at the Kuala Tatau Fish Market yesterday.
Mohamad Faiz pointed out that the current fisheries sector requires new economic models that not only rely on marine resources but also participate in the high-demand leisure industry, particularly the sport of fishing.
“If operated professionally, this leisure fishing boat project can not only provide additional income for fishermen but also attract tourists, continuously promoting local economic development,” he added.
At the same event, Mohamad Faiz also officiated the launch ceremony of PNK Bintulu's leisure fishing boat project, which received an initial funding of RM50,000 from LKIM.
