More Smart Shopping Carts at Singapore's FairPrice Supermarkets to Enhance Shopping Experience

Some FairPrice Group supermarkets in Singapore will implement digital innovation tools by the end of this year, providing consumers with a better shopping experience and helping supermarket staff perform their duties more effectively.

FairPrice Group announced on Thursday that some of its outlets will feature smart shopping carts and digital price tags, roll out a new online-offline hybrid retail model called 'ShopBeyond', and introduce the 'Grocer Genie' application for staff.

These digital innovation tools and retail models are jointly designed and developed with Google Cloud AI.

FairPrice Group and Google have partnered to create the 'Store of Tomorrow' concept, committing to pilot 20 digital solutions each year, aiming to reshape the retail experience for both customers and employees. The first outlet under this initiative has opened in August 2025 at Punggol Coast Mall.

FairPrice Group CEO Vipul Chawla said: 'By rolling out matured AI solutions from the Store of Tomorrow initiative to more outlets islandwide, we aim to reimagine our customers’ shopping experience and remove the difficulties they face when purchasing daily necessities each week.'

48 FairPrice Xtra hypermarkets and FairPrice Finest supermarkets will offer smart shopping carts to help customers locate products on the shelves, and provide personalized promotional information based on items placed in the cart. Customers can also scan and pay while shopping. Tests have shown that the smart carts can reduce checkout times from several minutes to an average of 36 seconds. FairPrice Group plans to eventually offer smart shopping carts at other stores as well.

In addition, 48 stores will adopt digital price tags, providing customers with real-time pricing and promotional information. This eliminates reliance on paper price tags, thereby reducing carbon footprint. Since price tags no longer need to be printed or manually replaced, it is expected to save 15,000 man-hours and $138,000 (approximately RM428,600) in costs annually.

The 'Grocer Genie' application will also be rolled out to all store teams by the end of this year. This all-in-one AI app features intelligent task management and the ability to analyze key performance indicators such as sales, inventory, and customer satisfaction.

The 'ShopBeyond' online-offline hybrid retail model can also connect physical shelves with virtual shelves displaying related products. While shopping in-store, customers can also purchase online products and arrange for home delivery. This feature is currently available at the Punggol Coast Mall and Tenga Parc Point neighborhood center supermarkets, and FairPrice Group plans to gradually introduce it at other outlets in the future.
