Due to a contract dispute with her former manager Yu Yuxing, Cecilia Cheung was recently brought to the Hong Kong High Court. The case officially commenced trial in early December and has now entered substantive hearings. The plaintiff claims that after Cecilia received over 40 million Hong Kong dollars (approximately 21.12 million ringgit) in advance film remuneration, she failed to fulfill the associated film and management contracts. They are currently pursuing her for at least 12.76 million Hong Kong dollars (about 6.73 million ringgit) and requesting the disclosure of her income records.
The hearing continued on the 8th. Around 8:30 a.m., Cecilia Cheung, dressed in a coat and wearing a mask and sunglasses, arrived at the High Court by nanny van. She politely greeted reporters at the scene and, accompanied by her assistant, entered the courtroom. Yu Yuxing arrived around 9:20 a.m. Both parties continued to dispute over the signing of courtroom documents and the authenticity of those documents. Cecilia reiterated that she had always trusted her assistant Zhou Jingyi, rarely paying attention to matters on documents; as long as Zhou reviewed them and said there was no issue, she would sign. She also stated that she has many different signature styles, hence the need for a handwriting expert.
During the hearing, Cecilia Cheung repeatedly interrupted the plaintiff's lawyer's questions and even became emotional and wept. She first requested that the plaintiff's lawyer pause to give her “three seconds to catch her breath.” She further explained that the presence of media was putting her under great pressure. The judge expressed understanding of her situation and stated that if she really needed a break, she could request it from the court. However, the judge also hoped she would exercise more patience and wait for the plaintiff's lawyer to finish before responding.
