Failed Lunar Landing: Japanese Company's Lander Loses Contact

Published at Jun 06, 2025 12:04 pm
The lunar lander "Tough" by Japanese private enterprise "ispace" attempted to land on the lunar surface in the early hours of the 6th but lost contact before the scheduled landing.

The "Tough" was scheduled to land on the lunar surface at 4:17 am Japan time (3:17 am Beijing time) on the 6th. About one minute before the scheduled landing time, the live broadcast showed that the speed and altitude data of the lander suddenly disappeared.

The "ispace" company ultimately aborted the lunar mission due to losing contact with the lander.

Company CEO Takeshi Hakamada pointed out to the media that due to the "unlikely recovery of communication with the lander," the company decided to end the mission.

The "Tough" was launched aboard the "Falcon 9" rocket of the American company Space Exploration Technologies on January 15, 2025, and entered lunar orbit on May 7.

The previous lunar lander of "ispace" lost contact with the ground during the landing attempt in the early hours of April 26, 2023, failing to complete the lunar landing mission.
