(Bandar Seri Begawan, 17th) The Minister of Education, Datin Romaizah, attended the 7th APEC Education Ministerial Meeting (AEMM) held from May 13 to 15 at the International Convention Center in Jeju Island, South Korea.
At the meeting, the Minister introduced Brunei's strategic educational direction and key initiatives, including the Ministry of Education's (MoE) "2023-2027 Digital Transformation Plan," the "School Network Infrastructure Upgrade Plan" (SNIU), and the national AI training program for educators.
She also highlighted Brunei's participation in regional cooperation projects, such as the APEC Digital Education Policy Training Program (ADEPT). This program aims to facilitate knowledge exchange, bridge the digital learning gap, and support the joint formulation of strategic directions to enhance teachers' capabilities.
As part of the meeting agenda, the Minister visited Seowegui Central Girls' High School in Jeju Island, which is implementing educational projects centered on artificial intelligence, digitalization, and global literacy. This visit provided valuable insights into South Korea's future-oriented educational practices.
The 7th APEC Education Ministerial Meeting is the highest-level platform in the region for discussing education policies. This meeting convened nine years after the sixth meeting in Peru in 2016. A total of 20 education ministers or representatives from 21 APEC member economies attended this meeting, focusing on the challenges and strategic directions for future education.
The meeting also provided an important platform to exchange educational innovations, address challenges in the digital age, and explore opportunities to strengthen regional cooperation.
As the chair of the APEC 2025 agenda, South Korea is committed to promoting inclusive and resilient education development in the region.
This year's meeting theme was "Closing the Education Gap in the Era of Digital Transformation to Promote Inclusive Growth," hosted by South Korea's acting president, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Lee Joo-ho. In his opening remarks, he emphasized the importance of addressing emerging challenges, particularly the transformations brought by digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI), as well as the pressures of climate change and socio-economic disparities.
APEC has played a crucial role in addressing global issues such as financial crises and health emergencies through regional cooperation and solidarity. At the meeting, education ministers from member countries shared their insights and best practices on key issues such as transformation and personalized educational innovation, education cooperation and expanding opportunity channels, and strengthening quality education and sustainable economic growth.
