(Syria, 28th) The Syrian Transitional Government plans to hold its first parliamentary elections in September.
According to Reuters, Mohamed Taha, chairman of Syria’s electoral commission, told the state news agency SANA on Sunday (July 27) that the People’s Assembly elections will be held between September 15 and 20 to elect 210 lawmakers.
Syrian interim president Shara has already received the draft election law, which amends a previous decree by increasing the number of seats in the People’s Assembly from 150 to 210, of which one third will be appointed by the president.
The Syrian government has pledged broad representation in parliament and will allow foreign observers to supervise the work of the electoral commission.
Syrian officials said that areas outside government control, including the Kurdish-controlled northern region and the Druze-majority southern province of Sweida, will continue to have parliamentary seats allocated according to population.
The new parliament is expected to lay the foundation for a broader democratic process in Syria, though critics point out that participation by minority groups remains insufficient.
In addition, the new parliament will also push for landmark legislation to fundamentally reform economic policies long dominated by the ruling authorities, and pass treaties that could reshape Syria’s diplomatic alliances.
