(South Korea, 28th) — Choi Ho, a former member of the Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly who was under investigation by prosecutors for allegedly implicating former President Yoon Suk-yeol and his wife in the People's Power Party nomination scandal, has been found dead. Nomination refers to the recommendation of candidates for public office elections by political parties in South Korea.
According to Yonhap News Agency, citing the Pyeongtaek Police Station in Gyeonggi-do, Choi Ho was found dead on a mountain in Jisan-dong, Pyeongtaek City, at around 3 a.m. on Monday (July 28). Choi's family had reported him missing to the police at around 2 a.m. that day.
The police believe Choi took his own life after leaving home around 5 p.m. on Sunday, and no suicide note was found at the scene. The police stated that since the investigation is ongoing, it is inappropriate to release further details of the case.
In the 2022 local council and government leadership elections, Choi Ho received the People's Power Party's nomination as Pyeongtaek mayoral candidate. Prosecutors suspect that Yoon Suk-yeol and his wife were involved in supporting "pro-Yoon" Choi Ho during the nomination process for Pyeongtaek's mayoral candidate, and have launched an investigation into the matter.
