(Bandar Seri Begawan, 25th) The 6th Brunei-China Trade, Investment and Economic Cooperation Consultation Meeting was held yesterday at the Radisson Hotel, co-chaired by Yan Dong and Brunei's Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Finance and Economy, May. The two sides conducted in-depth exchanges of views on topics such as deepening economic and trade relations between Brunei and China.
During the meeting, both sides reviewed and agreed to consolidate the positive progress achieved in bilateral cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, trade and investment industrial cooperation, agriculture and agri-processing, digital economy and innovation, connectivity, tourism, and other emerging areas of shared interest.
The two sides also welcomed progress made in key bilateral frameworks and projects, such as the Brunei-Guangxi Economic Corridor, Muara Port Company, and Hengyi Industries.
The Chinese side expressed continued support for Brunei’s economic diversification efforts, including encouraging Chinese investment and construction of the economic corridor to enhance Brunei’s competitiveness as a regional logistics hub. Both sides also emphasized further expanding opportunities for trade and investment cooperation, such as enabling high-end and specialty Bruneian products to better access the Chinese market, and encouraging the participation of small and medium enterprises in the China-ASEAN Expo, China International Import Expo, and other trade exhibitions and Chinese business platforms.
On regional and international affairs, both parties reiterated the importance of open markets, regional integration, and a rules-based, transparent, and non-discriminatory multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization at its core.
The meeting also provided a forum for exchanging views on cooperation under regional frameworks and initiatives, including ASEAN-China relations, Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, APEC, Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, and Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area-China Cooperation.
Both parties expressed confidence that this meeting would provide useful guidance for the next stage of bilateral cooperation, and noted that the 7th Brunei–People's Republic of China Trade, Investment and Economic Cooperation Consultation Meeting would be held in China at a date and venue to be mutually agreed upon.
Senior officials from relevant Bruneian ministries, departments, and agencies also attended the meeting, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, as well as the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications.
