(Kuching, 28th) The Prime Minister’s Department (PMD) has denied issuing any document requiring a ban on the use of smartphones by children under 16.
In a brief statement, the PMD said that a document circulating on WhatsApp titled “Order to Ban Individuals Under 16 From Using Smartphones” (Perintah Larangan Penggunaan Telefon Pintar Bagi Individu Di Bawah Umur 16 Tahun) is false, and called on the public not to forward it.
“To raise public awareness, our department has never issued any statement on this matter. The public should always act in a moral and responsible manner, and verify the authenticity of any information before forwarding it, to avoid causing confusion.”
The statement also reminded the public that under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, spreading false news or misinformation is an offense.
