US President Trump stated on the 7th that if the EU fails to fulfill the bilateral trade agreement reached with the US last year by July 4th, tariffs on EU products exported to the US will immediately jump to a much higher level.

He wrote on social media that he had a very good call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen that day. The EU has already promised to fulfill the bilateral trade agreement and reduce tariffs on US exports to the EU to zero, and he has been patiently waiting for the EU to deliver on its commitment.

On the 1st, Trump threatened via social media that since the EU had not complied with the bilateral trade agreement with the US, the US would raise tariffs on EU cars imported to the US from 15% to 25% this week.

The US and EU reached a trade agreement in July 2025. Due to tensions arising from the US' demand for Denmark's autonomous territory Greenland and rulings by the US Supreme Court declaring Trump administration's large-scale tariff policies illegal, the EU's approval of the agreement was delayed for several months.

On March 26, Members of the European Parliament voted to conditionally implement the US-EU trade agreement. On May 5, the European Commission urged the US to implement the main terms of the agreement before the first anniversary of the agreement's signing at the end of July.
