(Bandar Seri Begawan, 19th) The International School Brunei (ISB) has made history by becoming the first international school in Brunei to implement the Brunei Red Crescent Youth Programme, receiving the certificate of registration for the Brunei Red Crescent School Cadet Unit.
The launch ceremony was held on Monday, June 8th, 2026, at the ISB Theatre, attended by students, staff, parents, and representatives from the Brunei Red Crescent as guests.
The origins of this program at ISB date back to 2025, when Year 11 student Cayden Po proposed introducing the Brunei Red Crescent Youth Programme to the school’s secondary student body. Inspired by the Red Crescent’s mission of humanity and care, Cayden Po actively promoted the idea and, from the third term of the 2024/2025 academic year through to the second term of 2025/2026, led related extracurricular activities every Monday. As a Red Crescent cadet member, he shared knowledge and experience with his peers.
Dr Peter Jones, Director of Secondary at ISB, said in his welcome speech that the launch reflects the integration of student leadership and service spirit. He emphasized that the establishment of the unit is not just the beginning of an extracurricular activity but also symbolizes students’ readiness to step out of the classroom and serve the community.
To support the program’s implementation, students and staff underwent first aid training on April 4 and April 25, 2026, respectively. Currently, the school’s Red Crescent membership comprises 32 students and 5 staff members.
The guest of honor, Brunei Red Crescent President Dato Lailatul Zubaidah Haji Mohd Hussen (also an alumna of ISB), remarked that this year’s World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day theme is “United in Humanity,” emphasizing that the humanitarian spirit connects the world closely.
She noted that the global Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement spans 191 national societies, about 17 million volunteers and staff, and nearly 289,000 local branches. She stated that this launch ceremony marks a significant milestone for the Brunei Red Crescent, as ISB is the first private educational institution in the country to establish a school cadet unit.
Following this, Brunei Red Crescent Deputy Youth Director Muhammad Faik Iqbal Haji Abdul Majid explained youth unit development opportunities and participation pathways to the students.
ISB Executive Principal Dominic Morley said that the programme reflects the school’s mission to nurture student potential in an environment of academic excellence and inclusion, while strengthening life skills and values. He noted that the courage, empathy and leadership demonstrated by Red Crescent members are a true embodiment of the school’s mission.
During the ceremony, participating students and staff recited the Red Crescent membership oath and took part in a certificate presentation. On behalf of the school, Dominic Morley received the certificate of school cadet unit registration from Dato Lailatul Zubaidah Haji Mohd Hussen. Students and staff were also awarded membership and first aid certificates.
ISB attendees included Director of Enrichment Ashley David and Deputy Director of Secondary Wong Ai Ling.
