EU to Hold Special Summit Over US Tariffs Imposed Due to Greenland Issue

Published at Jan 19, 2026 10:13 am
On the 18th, President of the European Council, Costa, announced that the EU will hold a special summit to respond to the US imposing additional tariffs due to the Greenland issue.

In a statement, Costa said he has consulted with EU member states regarding the tensions surrounding Greenland. Given the seriousness of the situation, the European Council will convene a special summit in the coming days to further coordinate positions on the Greenland issue.

The statement indicated that the US tariff increase would undermine transatlantic relations and is inconsistent with the trade agreements reached between Europe and the US. The EU will resist any form of coercion.

On January 17th, US President Trump announced on social media that the United States will, starting February 1st, impose a 10% tariff on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland for sending troops to Greenland. The tariff rate will be raised to 25% starting June 1st and will remain until these countries reach an agreement with the United States regarding the "purchase of Greenland."
