Sarawak Aims to Build 7,000 Telecommunication Towers

(Kuching, 9th) Sarawak Minister of Utilities and Telecommunication, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, stated that as of now, 603 SMART telecommunications towers have been completed in Sarawak, of which 502 have been put into operation, and 405 are being gradually rolled out using Multi-Operator Core Network (MOCN) technology.
He said: “The MOCN technology also allows major telco companies such as CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile, YTL, and Telekom Malaysia (TM) to jointly provide network services. This will also enable rural and remote communities, regardless of which telco company they choose, to enjoy comprehensive network coverage.”
He delivered these remarks during his keynote speech this morning at the opening ceremony of the ‘Business Digitalisation Initiative (BDI @ Sarawak)’ held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).
He further pointed out that Sarawak aims to construct at least 7,000 telecommunications towers across the state to achieve more comprehensive network coverage.
“Currently, over 5,000 telecommunications towers have been built throughout Sarawak to ensure that infrastructure can physically expand network connectivity.”
He added that Sarawak has implemented specific measures to drive digital transformation, including building digital infrastructure and providing training and financial support to small and medium enterprises.
“We are carrying out these efforts because a solid infrastructure is the prerequisite for digital transformation. Therefore, the Sarawak government has also launched the ‘SALURAN’ program, which will build 600 4G telecommunications towers in the remote and inland regions of Sarawak. This program is led by the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) under the SMART Rural Telecommunication Project and is implemented by the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC).”
He said that in conjunction with the construction of SMART telecom towers, the Sarawak government launched the ‘MySRBN’ (Sarawak Rural Broadband Network) service in March 2021.
“MySRBN uses Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) technology, successfully providing high-speed internet service to rural communities that previously had no network coverage.”
He stated that currently, 32,000 households have been connected to the network through MySRBN, and this number continues to increase.
“This service has also propelled Sarawak’s economic development, and one significant result is that it has created new opportunities for local entrepreneurs to enter the online business sector.”
