Curtin University’s Construction Management Programme Receives International Accreditation, Advancing Sarawak’s Green Development

(Miri, 9th July) Curtin University Malaysia's Bachelor of Applied Science in Construction Management (Honours) has officially received full accreditation from the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS). This signifies that the programme has achieved international professional standards, further consolidating Curtin’s leading position in construction and quantity surveying education.

This accreditation not only places Curtin Malaysia among internationally recognised institutions in construction management, but also highlights its long-term efforts in nurturing high-quality professionals with expertise in green and digital construction—especially through its active role in supporting Sarawak’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030).

Dr. Low Wai Wah, Head of the Department of Built Environment at the Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences, pointed out that this achievement reflects the unwavering commitment of teams at both the Miri and Perth campuses to maintain teaching quality and strengthen industry engagement.

“Our curriculum is rigorous and we maintain close collaboration with the construction industry, striving to provide students with practice-oriented training. This equips them with strong competitiveness in areas such as quantity surveying, project management, and construction consultancy.”

Professor Vincent Lee, Interim Pro Vice-Chancellor, President, and Chief Executive of Curtin Malaysia, stated that sustainability and digital technology concepts had already been incorporated into the programme years ago, including the application of green materials, integration of renewable energy, and carbon-neutral project design.
“After graduation, our students have actively participated in Sarawak's green economic development, helping to achieve the targets set by the state’s 'Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030' (PCDS 2030) and responding to the dual needs of infrastructure transformation and sustainable development.”
This four-year honours degree was enhanced in 2023 with the addition of a quantity surveying specialisation. It is now integrated with Industry 4.0 technologies, carbon tracking systems, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The curriculum, co-developed by construction experts from both Malaysia and Australia, covers key areas including construction technology, cost estimation, project planning, contract management, communication, and leadership skills.

Currently, the programme is accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), the Board of Quantity Surveyors Malaysia (BQSM), and the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS). The corresponding programme at Curtin’s main campus in Australia is also recognised by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Australian Institute of Building (AIB), and Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) in the UK.

AIQS accreditation not only enhances Curtin University’s global reputation, but also assures students, parents, and employers of the programme’s quality, professionalism, and future employment prospects.

To further meet the talent needs of the industry, Curtin Malaysia also offers postgraduate programmes in Project Management, ranging from Graduate Certificates and Graduate Diplomas to the Master of Science. These programmes are widely applicable across various fields, including construction, engineering, healthcare, information technology, education, and major events.

With its forward-looking and industry-integrated educational approach, Curtin University continues to promote human capital development, helping Sarawak realise its goals for green, sustainable, and future-oriented transformation.
