(Miri, 7th) – Co-hosted by the Miri Intellectual Enthusiasts Club and Miri Star City Shopping Mall, the “2026 Yu Xiao Shan Mayor’s Cup Chess Championship” was successfully concluded yesterday.
This year's event was met with an enthusiastic response, attracting a total of 235 participants. Competitors not only came from Miri and across Sarawak, but also from areas such as Kuala Lumpur, Sabah, Perak, Bintulu, and Marudi. Chess enthusiasts gathered in Miri to make friends through chess and to exchange skills, making for a grand occasion.
During the competition, participants were fully focused, engaging in battles of intellect and strategy on the chessboard, fully showcasing the appeal and competitive spirit of chess. Both experienced players and young newcomers performed at their best on the field, bringing spectators a series of brilliant matches.
Miri Mayor Yu Xiao Shan expressed hope that more similar events will be held in Miri in the future, to further promote the development of mind sports, attract more young people to participate in healthy and educational activities, and enhance Miri’s image as a city of sports and cultural activities.
