(Singapore, May 4) – During the general election campaign, issues of race and religion were used to stir voters' emotions. Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said this might have influenced the election results to some extent, though the extent of the impact remains unclear.
According to a report by Lianhe Zaobao, Lawrence Wong held a press conference in the early hours of May 4 to summarize the election after the results were finalized. He once again addressed incidents of identity politics that occurred during the campaign.
Wong stated that the election results still demonstrate that the majority of Singaporeans reject identity politics and "continue to support a multiracial and multireligious society."
He said some individuals conflated race and religion with politics, forcing him to intervene. This wasn’t just foreign interference; many Singaporeans also posted negative or even malicious comments online, urging people to vote based on racial issues.
Wong promised, “We will continue to safeguard the interests of Singaporeans, support the aspirations of all, and ensure that everyone thrives in this multiracial, multireligious society. This is my commitment to every community and every Singaporean.”
