Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan pointed out that against the backdrop of global crises threatening world peace, prosperity, and the well-being of people, the East Asia Summit (EAS) is more important and critical than ever before.
"The world is facing a complex network of crises, endangering global peace, shared prosperity, and the well-being of people everywhere. These range from the outbreak of conflicts, intensifying major power competition, to economic fragmentation, rapid technological changes, and transnational security threats."
He made these remarks in his opening speech at the 15th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meeting on Friday (July 11).
Mohamad Hasan mentioned that global and regional situations are changing rapidly, testing the resolve and institutional strength of nations as well as the resilience of international cooperation.
"Therefore, we must adhere to the purpose and objectives of the East Asia Summit, promote principled engagement, and seek consensus on issues of common concern."
He welcomed participating countries' support for Malaysia's priorities as the 2025 ASEAN Chair, especially in building strategic trust through diplomacy, goodwill, and respect for international law.
"The combined GDP of the countries present is about US$68 trillion, accounting for more than half of the global economy. This economic influence further highlights the strategic importance of the East Asia Summit, not just as a platform for dialogue, but also as a driving force for cooperation and shared resilience."
On issues relating to Ukraine and the Middle East, Mohamad Hasan pointed out that ASEAN welcomes all peace efforts based on international law, international humanitarian law, and the UN Charter.
He reiterated Malaysia's firm stance on the Palestine issue and called for an end to the decades-long conflict.
"This is the longest conflict in modern history, rooted in the injustice and illegal occupation of Palestinian territories, which must end.
"Eighty years of impunity has fueled Israel's blatant acts of genocide, including causing large-scale famine among babies and children. This is unacceptable, must not be allowed to continue, and must be stopped immediately."
The East Asia Summit was established in 2005, and on its 20th anniversary this year, Mohamad Hasan called on all partners to commit to ending global conflicts.
"Let us, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the East Asia Summit, commit to taking decisive action guided by the principles of justice, fairness, equality, and humanity to end all conflicts. ASEAN looks forward to the constructive participation and commitment of all partners to ensure lasting peace, shared prosperity, and comprehensive progress."
