(Miri, 1st) Miri police conducted a joint operation against 'motorcycle gangs' last night (May 31st) from around 11 PM to the early hours of the morning in the Miri city area and Miri bypass area, seizing a total of 11 motorcycles and issuing 67 traffic summonses.
During this operation, the Miri Police Traffic Division checked a total of 22 men, of whom three local men aged 16, 21, and 25 were arrested by the police for allegedly violating Section 42(1) of the 1987 Road Transport Act, which pertains to reckless and dangerous driving.
If convicted, the suspects could be taken to court, facing penalties of up to 5 years in prison, fines ranging from no less than RM5,000 to RM10,000, and the revocation of their driving licenses.
Additionally, the police issued a total of 67 traffic summonses during the operation for various offenses, including expired vehicle road tax, driving without a license, vehicle body modifications, exhaust modification, lack of side mirrors, missing license plates, using non-standard 'fancy' license plates, not displaying 'P plates', and non-compliant motorcycle brake systems.
The police also invoked Section 60 of the 1987 Road Transport Act to seize 11 motorcycles for further investigation and documentation.

The police emphasize that they will continue to conduct similar enforcement operations irregularly and urge all road users, especially motorcyclists, to adhere to traffic regulations, avoid participating in illegal racing activities, unauthorized vehicle modifications, or gathering on roadsides causing noise and traffic congestion, to maintain public peace and road safety.
The police also remind that negligence by drivers or riders could pose serious safety risks to themselves and other road users.
