Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a video address at the United Nations Climate Change Summit, announcing that by 2035, China will reduce net greenhouse gas emissions across its entire economy by 7%-10% from its peak level.
According to Xinhua News Agency, on Wednesday (September 24), Xi Jinping delivered a video speech at the United Nations Climate Change Summit, announcing a new round of China's Nationally Determined Contributions.
Xi announced that by 2035, China's net greenhouse gas emissions across the entire economy will be reduced by 7%-10% from the peak level, and the nation will strive to do even better. The share of non-fossil energy in overall energy consumption will reach over 30%. The total installed capacity of wind and solar power will be more than six times that of 2020, aiming to reach 3.6 billion kilowatts. Forest stock volume will exceed 24 billion cubic meters. New energy vehicles will become the mainstream of new vehicle sales. The national carbon emissions trading market will cover the major high-emission industries, and a climate-adaptive society will be basically established.
Xi described these as the targets formulated by China with reference to the requirements of the Paris Agreement and through its utmost efforts, adding, "Achieving these targets will require China to make arduous efforts on its own, as well as a favorable and open international environment. We have the determination and confidence to fulfill our commitments."
Xi also stressed that green and low-carbon transformation is the trend of the times, and stated without naming names: “Although some countries are acting against the tide, the international community should keep to the right direction, remain confident, continue to take action, and not lessen efforts, so as to promote the formulation and implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions and inject more positive energy into global climate governance cooperation.”
Since US President Trump returned to the White House, the United States has once again announced its withdrawal from the Paris Agreement. On Tuesday (23rd), Trump stated in a speech at the UN General Assembly that climate change is a hoax and criticized EU member states and China for readily adopting renewable energy technologies.
