(Siburan, 31st) Sarawak Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration, and Environment, Datuk Len Talif Salleh, emphasized that sand mining activities in Sarawak rivers must be conducted responsibly to ensure the balance of the natural ecosystem is not destroyed.
He said that all development projects involving natural resources must take sustainability into account in order to protect the habitats of fish, prawns, and other riverine wildlife.
"Rivers are not just the lifeline for rural communities, but also a crucial source of livelihood for many local residents. Therefore, we must ensure that sand mining activities do not disrupt ecological balance."
Len Talif made these remarks yesterday while officiating the "Sri Aman District Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Program Cheque Presentation Ceremony" at the Sri Aman administrative center.
He said that the state government has always prioritized the balance between economic development and environmental conservation to ensure the long-term well-being of the people.
He pointed out that similar CSR programs demonstrate that development projects can also directly benefit local communities.
It is understood that this CSR program is implemented under the supervision of the Sarawak Land and Survey Department, in collaboration with Magna Focus Sdn Bhd, a company authorized to conduct sand mining activities in rivers statewide.
Len Talif stated that the company will allocate a portion of its sand mining profits to give back to rural communities involved in the relevant projects.
"The main purpose of this program is to strengthen the relationship between the government and industry while enhancing public understanding and acceptance of development projects," he said.
During the ceremony, a total of five cheques amounting to RM49,680.20 were presented to beneficiaries, including three longhouses in the Tanah Putih area — Rumah Jenna, Rumah Srit, and Rumah Augustin — each receiving RM9,893.40; while Kampung Delamankria and Surau Darul Huda each received RM10,000.
In addition, two villages in the Bintangor area will also receive CSR funding assistance soon.
On the same occasion, Len Talif also represented the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR) in presenting RM300,000 to St. Andrew's Church (Gereja St. Andrew) and allocated RM380,000 to Kampung Stalun Church, in support of local religious institution development.
