Oil Tanker Attacked, U.S. Launches Strikes on Iran Again

(US, 28th) The U.S. military stated that just hours after an oil tanker was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. launched strikes on Iran once again. This marks the most serious escalation since both parties signed a temporary peace agreement two weeks ago.

According to Reuters, the U.S. Central Command said on Saturday (June 27) that after a Panama-flagged oil tanker was attacked by an Iranian drone in the early morning, U.S. forces carried out a new round of strikes.

The U.S. Central Command said in a statement: "Iran had the opportunity to comply with the ceasefire agreement, but chose not to do so."

The statement noted that these strikes were "a direct response to Iran's continued aggression against commercial shipping," targeting Iran's military surveillance, communications, air defense systems, drone storage facilities, and mine-laying sites.

According to Fox News, a U.S. defense official later said that the strikes against Iranian targets have been completed.

On Saturday, Trump posted on social media: "There may come a time when we can no longer exercise restraint, and will have to complete the very successful operations we have already embarked upon by military means. If it comes to that, the Islamic Republic of Iran will cease to exist!"

On the Iranian side, national broadcaster IRIB reported at dawn on Sunday (28th) local time that an explosion was heard in Sirik, southern Iran, but gave no further details.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said the bridge of the attacked oil tanker was damaged, but all crew are safe. The multinational Joint Maritime Information Center, responsible for safeguarding shipping, has raised the security threat level due to recent events.

Iran has not made a direct comment on reports of attacks on specific vessels, but Iranian state TV claimed that the Revolutionary Guard fired "warning shots" at ships attempting to pass through waterways without Iran's approval, prompting other vessels to seek permission from Iran before passing through the Strait.

Aziz, Chairman of Iran's Parliamentary National Security Committee, warned on Saturday that any actions violating Iranian shipping instructions would be decisively responded to.

U.S. Vice President Vance pointed out that the U.S. has abided by the ceasefire agreement and blamed any potential conflict triggered by Iranian actions on Iran.

Vance said: "Iran signed the ceasefire agreement, and we have complied. If there are disagreements regarding the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding, they can call us to communicate. But violence will be met with violence."

The situation in the Strait has put the U.S.-Iran ceasefire arrangement on shaky ground. Previously, on Friday (26th), the U.S. attacked Iran’s missile and drone storage facilities and coastal radar sites in response to Iran’s attack on a cargo ship passing through the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday (25th).
