Macron Proposes Joint Exercises to Strengthen Greenland's Security

(France, 16th) French President Macron stated that France is willing to participate in joint exercises to enhance the security of Greenland.
Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark, and U.S. President Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, even not ruling out the use of force, claiming it is for U.S. national security.
Bloomberg reported that on Sunday (June 15), Macron said during a meeting with the media alongside Danish Prime Minister Frederiksen in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland: “Greenland is facing the covetous eyes of ambitious individuals. All of us, whether it is France or the entire European Union, believe that Greenland cannot be sold or taken away.”
Macron called the idea of Greenland being annexed by the U.S. a “crazy” notion and proposed joint exercises in the Arctic region with the Baltic nations, Nordic countries, Canada, and even the U.S.
Recently, Trump stated that the U.S. “100%” intends to acquire Greenland. In 2019, Trump first proposed this idea during his initial term as U.S. President.
Macron is the first foreign leader to visit Greenland since Trump threatened to acquire the island.
Macron and Trump will meet on Monday (16th) at the G7 leaders' summit in Canada. It is expected that G7 leaders will discuss the Middle East conflict and the Russia-Ukraine war, and will issue a statement on critical mineral resources.
Greenland is rich in mineral resources; it is believed that the island holds significant reserves of key minerals, including rare earths. Macron said he will discuss this issue with Trump at the G7 summit.
