(USA, 16th) Despite evidence that the conflict between Israel and Iran is escalating, U.S. President Trump still believes that peace will come soon and stated that Russian President Putin could act as a coordinating role.
According to Reuters, Trump posted on social media platform Truth Social on Sunday (June 15), stating that many discussions are underway to facilitate negotiations between Israel and Iran to resolve the issue.
Trump wrote: "Iran and Israel should reach an agreement, and they surely will. Israel and Iran will achieve peace soon! Many calls and talks are in progress."
Trump did not provide any details about the discussions or evidence of progress toward Israel-Iran peace, and his remarks contradict those of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.
On the same day, in an interview with ABC News, Trump said he is open to Putin acting as a mediator in the Israel-Iran conflict. Putin, since invading Ukraine on February 24, 2022, has been reluctant to accept Trump's suggestion to facilitate a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.
Trump revealed that during an earlier phone call with Putin, they focused on discussing the Israel-Iran war. ABC News reporter Rachel Scott quoted Trump saying that Putin called him about the Israel-Iran war, stating that Putin is "ready" to mediate.
Trump said: "We talked for a long time, and we discussed the Israel-Iran issue more than his (situation) in Ukraine. I believe this (Israel-Iran) war will be resolved."
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu pledged on Saturday that Israel will intensify its attacks on Iran.
Self-proclaimed as a peacemaker, Trump lamented that his efforts have not received more praise and listed other regional conflicts he has resolved, including the dispute between India and Pakistan.
Trump wrote on Truth Social: "I made many contributions and never received any recognition, but that's okay, the people understand. Make the Middle East great again!"
The White House spokesperson did not immediately respond to requests for comment on how Trump and the White House are easing tensions in the Middle East.
